Layered purple petals open around a golden core above the mature green bulb. The shoulders broaden beneath a relaxed, watchful face. It travels farther along connected water, unfolding its lotus gradually as it settles beside a pool that can support a longer visit.

Lotuslung

TideGrove

The story of Dewbulb.

The Dewbulb line inhabits shallow freshwater wetlands where a living bulb grows above a broad frog body. Strong folded legs, expressive eyes, and an unfolding lotus crown mark a support creature closely tied to the return of water.

Returnwater Marsh can lie quiet for much of a dry season. Dewbulb wait in the deepest reed pockets, their back bulbs closed and their feet tucked beneath them. When the first water reaches Lotus Sluice, Pondpulse begin a slow circuit between the pools. Their calls overlap down the channel, stopping wherever the returning flow has met a blockage. At those points, listeners can hear an unusual patch of silence between the answering pools.

Wetland keepers walk the silent gaps with baskets for loose silt and fallen reeds. They leave the living banks intact and work outward from the smallest opening. Lotuslung follow when the water begins moving, their petals unfolding above the shallow current. By the time a Bogbloom reaches the old reed marker, the circuit of calls has become continuous again. No single arrival announces the marsh's recovery. The clear sign is that a call can travel all the way around and receive an answer from every pool.

Origins & background

Duskfen's freshwater wetlands depend on shallow connections that change through each wet and dry season. The line's living back bulb stores moisture and develops into a true-looking but creature-grown lotus structure. Its Tide affinity remains central as Grove growth becomes more pronounced. Local keepers record which pools answer one another, treating the chorus as a guide to restored habitat rather than a demand for louder calls.

Behavior

Dewbulb sit nearly motionless until a small change in water depth prompts them to turn. Adults visit connected pools in a repeated order and pause at slow-flowing edges. Relaxed petals spread gradually, while a closed bulb and tightly tucked feet indicate a wish to conserve moisture.

Diet

Flying insects, soft marsh grubs, tender water shoots, and fallen wetland fruit. Adults feed around living reed roots, keeping the firm bank edges largely undisturbed during their pool circuits.

Place in the ecosystem

Their repeated movements link shallow pools and carry wetland plant fragments between them. Feeding keeps dense insect gatherings moving, while their resting hollows retain small pockets of moisture through the drier part of a season.

Neighbors & bonds

Budbun visit the late flowers along pools maintained by Dewbulb. Myclet occupy the damp fallen wood above those pools, while Reefclaw help keep coastal freshwater outlets from becoming blocked where Duskfen meets the sea.

Dewbulb ↗

A broad teal frog supports a closed green bulb above folded spring legs and dark webbed feet. Rounded eye ridges and a cream throat create an open, expressive face. It favors shallow pockets where its bulb stays moist while its head remains comfortably above water.

Pondpulse ↗

The back bulb swells above a broader body and acquires a fuller sepal collar. Stronger haunches carry it between familiar pools. Its visits develop into a repeated circuit, with deliberate pauses where water moves slowly or a neighboring call has become difficult to hear.

MilestoneReconnect two neighboring reed pools through an existing shallow channel.

Lotuslung Current

Layered purple petals open around a golden core above the mature green bulb. The shoulders broaden beneath a relaxed, watchful face. It travels farther along connected water, unfolding its lotus gradually as it settles beside a pool that can support a longer visit.

Bogbloom ↗

A large layered lotus and fine jade bulb channels rise over powerful folded legs. Its broad silhouette remains low and stable at the waterline. It maintains a whole circuit of wetland stops, responding to changed flow and waiting where a quiet connection needs attention.

MilestoneRestore water flow to a drying lotus pool and help its wildlife return.

Meeting in the wild.

  1. 01

Listen for a missing answer in the chain of pool calls.

  2. 02

Clear fallen reeds from an existing shallow connection.

  3. 03

Approach from firm ground while leaving the creature a route back to water.

“The loudest pond seemed healthiest until I walked the channel. The important sound was the quiet answer from the small pool that had finally reconnected.”— Hearthwild field notes
