Onyxcoil

StoneShadeUncommon

Dense cascading scales cover a mature, strongly tapered body beneath a dark head crown. The great prehensile tail curls above its back, remaining flexible despite its armor. It guards chosen shelters through repeated visits, preserving room for the lives already established within them.

The story of Scalip.

The Scalip line follows cool slate banks under the edge of Duskfen's nightwoods. Long snouts, overlapping heavy scales, and a tall curling armored tail give these guardians a compact defensive shape suited to narrow entrances and loose soil.

At Slatebank, a Curlscale chose a sleeping place outside a burrow already occupied by small bank animals. It fitted badly across the entrance: the tail stood too high, and the armored back left an awkward gap. Through the evening, the creature adjusted itself while the residents continued slipping past. By moonrise it had settled sideways, leaving a clear passage beneath the curve of its tail.

Rain arrived before dawn. Water ran down the slate face and met the creature's angled scales, dividing into separate trickles that passed beside the entrance. The Curlscale remained until the bank stopped shedding loose soil, then left to feed along the ravine. It returned as an Obsidolin through the following wet seasons, each time finding the same opening among changing roots. The Onyxcoil now seen there has made no claim on the burrow. Its chosen place is still just outside, where a guardian can help without occupying the shelter it protects.

Origins & background

Slatebank soil breaks into thin, shifting sheets above harder rock. A narrow snout helps this line forage beneath those edges, while its overlapping scales follow the body's curve without forming a rigid shell. The raised tail can anchor a resting posture on uneven ground. Mature Shade coloring appears among the scale layers, making an older guardian difficult to distinguish from a quiet ravine wall.

Behavior

Scalip approach openings slowly and wait for existing residents to emerge before investigating. Adults favor a position beside an entrance rather than directly inside it. A relaxed tail forms a high loose curl; a tight body roll indicates that the creature wants time and space.

Diet

Termites, soft-bodied bank insects, root grubs, and the occasional fallen berry. A long careful snout lets them forage around occupied burrows without tearing the whole bank apart.

Place in the ecosystem

Their narrow feeding excavations aerate soil while leaving much of a bank intact. Resting scales redirect minor runoff around vulnerable entrances, and abandoned feeding pockets collect moisture for small roots and fungi.

Neighbors & bonds

Myclet benefit from damp pockets left by Scalip's careful feeding. Fernip respect the open routes beneath a guardian's tail, while Pebblit occasionally stabilize the larger slate fragments surrounding a frequently used bank entrance.

Scalip ↗

A narrow stone-colored youngster carries the first rows of overlapping dark scales above broad digging feet. Its long cream snout and small ears remain exposed, while the flexible tail already lifts into a conspicuous curl. It inspects entrances with unusually careful pauses.

Curlscale ↗

More scale rows overlap across a longer back, and the armored tail arches higher behind the body. Its digging claws become more distinct. It begins choosing resting positions that leave a useful passage for smaller residents rather than simply offering the tightest personal shelter.

Obsidolin ↗

Purple shadow tones develop among heavy back scales and a small armored head crown. A richer tail curl gives its low silhouette a tall rear arc. This form studies how water and loose soil move around an entrance before deciding where to brace itself.

Meeting in the wild.

  1. 01

Look beside occupied burrows rather than entering them.

  2. 02

Sit quietly outside the tail curl and let residents pass.

  3. 03

Help divert loose runoff without sealing the bank's small openings.

“The Onyxcoil could fit inside the burrow only by driving everyone else out. It spent the entire night finding the perfect place beside it instead.”— Hearthwild field notes
