MORE THAN A NAME
The story of Wickip.
Wickip is a small Spark spirit built around a luminous lantern, with bowed cage ribs, a looped handle, and floating boots. Common along cared-for Duskfen paths, it becomes Luminarch through patient familiarity with travelers and their safe return routes.
The Unlit Mile is named for a road whose old lamps were removed when its bridges failed. Wickip began gathering at the surviving posts, sheltering inside the empty housings whenever rain swept the path. Walkers noticed that a returning lantern spirit often stopped beside the same broken section instead of following the group onward. It had learned a route with a missing piece, and was waiting for that piece to make sense again.
Villagers restored the crossing gradually, carrying materials only as far as the safe posts allowed. A Lanterelle traveled between their work groups each evening, making a familiar circuit through an unfamiliar undertaking. Guiding Lantern became the local name for the quiet moment when every worker could see the way home. A mature Luminarch still checks the smallest turns along that road, including places too ordinary to appear on ceremonial maps of the archipelago.
Origins & background
The lantern ribs, warm metal-colored roof, and small face form one living spirit. Handles vary in their bend, allowing residents to recognize familiar individuals without touching them. Young Wickip gather around established firefly paths. Mature forms gain Shade at Prime, developing a deeper dusk-colored presence around the light while keeping their expressive faces clearly visible to nearby companions.
A PLACE TO BELONG
Life in Duskfen.
Firefly paths and abandoned lantern groves.
Behavior
Wickip drifts a little ahead of a familiar walker and pauses at a turn until the group catches up. It investigates abandoned lantern posts with obvious interest. Luminarch prefers a steady traveling pace and often returns to the last place where someone stopped to rest.
Diet
It accepts crushed seed nectar, mineral water, and softened lantern-fruit pulp, feeding at sheltered posts where passing insects and travelers can continue using the same resting place.
Place in the ecosystem
Wickip links scattered safe resting points along nightwood paths. Its regular visits draw caretakers toward neglected crossings and support the continued use of narrow routes that would otherwise disappear beneath reeds and returning forest growth.
Neighbors & bonds
Veilbat often follows the same passages, sorting footsteps around a Wickip's steady position. Puddlep may rest beside causeway pools, where the lantern spirit pauses long enough for a slow companion to rejoin a traveling group.
ONE BOND, FOUR CHAPTERS
The Wickip lineage.
Evolution combines experience with a meaningful milestone. A WildKin may keep its current form until its keeper is ready.
Wickip ↗
Wickip has a bright inner lantern framed by a few bowed ribs, a small cream face, and floating boots held beneath the cage. Its rounded roof and loop handle make it look perpetually ready for a journey slightly longer than expected.
Glimmling ↗
Glimmling develops broader roof flourishes and a steadier arrangement of lantern ribs. Its small arms become more expressive at junctions, and it begins waiting for a whole familiar group rather than following whichever person happens to be closest to its glow.
Lanterelle Current
Lanterelle carries a fuller lantern cage and more pronounced roof details as Shade joins Spark. The dusk tones around its light deepen, while its face remains warm and readable. It begins keeping an evening circuit that connects several resting groups and repaired crossings.
Luminarch ↗
Luminarch has a generous bowed cage, a tall looped handle, and polished roof ornaments shaped by years of familiar travel. Its little floating boots still give it a companionable air. It patiently maintains routes through use, remembering the places where others need time.
INSTINCT & ELEMENT
How it holds its own.
Steady Wick
Its first support action after repositioning lasts slightly longer within a fixed cap.
Guiding Lantern
SparkA lantern pulse shields nearby allies and reveals hidden hazards.
A WildKin equips up to four moves. Its secondary element joins at Prime, alongside its signature move. Read the battle and evolution rules →
FROM THE KEEPER’S NOTEBOOK
Meeting in the wild.
- 01
Check old lantern posts near maintained paths after dusk.
- 02
Wait beside a safe turning point instead of chasing a drifting light.
- 03
Repair the ordinary route markers and crossings associated with its familiar circuit.
“The little light waited at the turn until the last walker caught up. My notebook called it common. Nothing about its attention felt careless or easily replaced.”— Hearthwild field notes
