MORE THAN A NAME
The story of Platelit.
The Platelit line is a low armored reptile whose layered back scutes and heavy tail club grow into a mobile ironstone bastion. Broad feet and outward-swept spikes support a patient guardian's deliberate use of space.
After a dry season, the people at Ironbend found an unexpected line of shallow dents across the riverbed. A Rivetback had been placing its tail club in each hollow and waiting. Some observers called it a territorial display; others thought it was searching for buried ore. The creature's behavior made sense only when the first rain arrived. Water gathered in the dents, revealing a gentle course around a bank that had become dangerously undercut.
The next settlement meeting was held beside the riverbed so everyone could see that route. Rather than walling the whole bank, the workers guided the new channel through the creature's sequence of hollows. When an old storehouse wall later collapsed, a Ferrankyl approached with the same unhurried pattern: touch, wait, move, touch again. Its club could have shattered the wall. It instead loosened the safe outer pieces first, preserving the narrow space around a trapped traveler until help could reach them.
Origins & background
Ironstone flats expose alternating hard plates and softer sediment. The line's armor echoes that structure without being a set of tools built by people. Overlapping scutes distribute pressure across its broad back, while a flexible tail supports the separate club. Older individuals acquire a Stone character around their armor edges and favor routes they have tested across several weather cycles.
A PLACE TO BELONG
Life in Runescar.
Ironstone flats, dry riverbeds, and mineral-rich badlands..
Behavior
Platelit pauses so completely that small animals sometimes climb over its shell. Adults pivot carefully before moving their clubs and avoid crowded turning spaces. Repeated club touches usually mean they are testing a surface, while a club held close to the body signals a wish to remain undisturbed.
Diet
Fibrous badland plants, tough seed stems, mineral-rich roots, and occasional burrowing insects exposed by its feet. It feeds around living shrubs rather than uprooting every available clump.
Place in the ecosystem
Heavy tracks catch runoff and create small temporary pools across dry flats. Tail testing loosens compacted patches without disturbing an entire bank, leaving useful germination sites around the edges of seasonal watercourses.
Neighbors & bonds
Ferritot investigate the seams exposed around club marks, and Pebblit inspect larger fractures nearby. Terrapeb often follow a settled Ferrankyl route, where the broad tracks make travel easier across broken quarry ground.
ONE BOND, FOUR CHAPTERS
The Platelit lineage.
Evolution combines experience with a meaningful milestone. A WildKin may keep its current form until its keeper is ready.
Platelit ↗
A low slate reptile with broad feet, a round face, paired shell scutes, and a modest tail club. Copper side growth and dark dorsal blades establish its armored identity early. It explores by stopping often and touching interesting ground with the club.
Rivetback ↗
Additional overlapping shell rows and longer dorsal bastions strengthen the back while the club gains weight. Its side spikes sweep farther outward. This form begins revisiting the same testing points, comparing a familiar surface before and after rainfall or a long dry period.
Armortail Current
Iron blades develop around the enlarged tail club, and the shell broadens into a layered defensive ridge. It becomes especially careful about turning near companions. A mature club is both a formidable striking shape and an increasingly precise instrument for investigating unstable ground.
Ferrankyl ↗
A broad ironstone back supports dense overlapping scutes and tall dorsal bastions above a huge bladed club. Its low frame moves with measured certainty. It can hold a difficult position for companions, then shift just enough to create a useful passage through the obstruction.
INSTINCT & ELEMENT
How it holds its own.
Interlock
After remaining in place for a turn, the next direct hit deals reduced damage.
Rivet Sweep
IronSweep the heavy club through nearby enemies and briefly weaken their guard.
A WildKin equips up to four moves. Its secondary element joins at Prime, alongside its signature move. Read the battle and evolution rules →
FROM THE KEEPER’S NOTEBOOK
Meeting in the wild.
- 01
Search for evenly spaced club marks beside a dry channel.
- 02
Stay outside the tail's turning arc during an approach.
- 03
Help clear loose debris around a blocked route before touching the main obstruction.
“The tail marks resembled a boast until rain filled them. What I had drawn as a boundary on my map was actually a proposed river channel.”— Hearthwild field notes
