The story of Sprighorn.

The Sprighorn line tends the living crossings of Heartwood. Teal fur, copper tail leaves, and a seed-bearing wooden crest identify these patient guardians, whose bark armor develops alongside their willingness to shelter other creatures.

When the Seedstep crossing sagged after a wet season, the bridge keepers brought fresh rope and found a Sprighorn asleep across their tools. Each time they moved it, it returned with an acorn. Keeper Seva finally followed the small creature beneath the bridge, where a supporting root had split around a buried stone. The acorns marked the hollow that the workers, watching only the walkway, had missed.

Seva cleared the stone and planted the acorns along the bank. Over the following seasons, the same creature returned with a broader crest and bark over its forelegs. When a flood finally reached the new crossing, it stood against the current while travelers climbed through its protective brambles. The bridge keepers still repair their ropes, but they now inspect the bank first. Beside the oldest support grows a tree whose roots leave a comfortable hollow for a sleeping Grovewarden.

Origins & background

Heartwood crossings grow from trained roots, fallen trunks, and generations of careful tending. The Sprighorn line uses the same routes to move seeds between suitable banks. Its golden crest ornaments are living seed capsules rather than collected jewelry. Older individuals develop stone-firm bark around places that bear weight, giving their protection a visible history without making every guardian look identical.

Behavior

Sprighorn tests unfamiliar ground with its front paws before committing its weight. Adults inspect routes after heavy rain and quietly redirect smaller creatures around weak crossings. A relaxed tail opens its copper leaves; a tightly folded tail usually means the guardian is considering a problem.

Diet

Tender shoots, river roots, fallen orchard fruit, and mineral-rich clay. It carries promising seeds away from its feeding places rather than eating every fruit completely.

Place in the ecosystem

These guardians stabilize disturbed riverbanks and carry large seeds across water. Their resting hollows collect leaf litter, creating sheltered nursery beds that persist long after the creature moves on.

Neighbors & bonds

Mossprig browse new shoots without trampling the seedlings Sprighorn protects. Myclet often appear in the damp litter beneath an older guardian's sleeping hollow, while Fernip use its crossings after dusk.

Tanglehorn ↗

The horn opens into a connected wooden crescent, framing an increasingly confident face. Heavier front paws anchor the body, and three copper tail leaves signal its mood. It begins maintaining a familiar stretch of riverbank rather than wandering between shelters.

Briarhorn ↗

Curved bark shields cover the forearms, shoulder briars widen the silhouette, and the crest carries a fuller seed channel. Its careful stance becomes a movable barrier, allowing frightened companions to gather behind it while it studies a safe exit.

Grovewarden ↗

A split living canopy rises from the great wooden crest above elder tusks and broad protective bark. Fuller copper tail leaves sweep behind its grounded frame. It tends routes across an entire sanctuary, remembering seasonal crossings that younger guardians have never seen.
