Regalume

GroveIron

The story of Plumip.

Plumip carries the first small promise of a magnificent train through Heartwood's overgrown courts. Its upright posture, blue neck, and eye-spotted feathers mature into Regalume, a rare Grove bird whose greatest display usually welcomes company rather than challenges it.

The Jewelseed Court was abandoned as a residence long before its gardens stopped flowering. Plumip nested beneath the fallen benches and carried fallen fruit into the shaded colonnade, where new seedlings found protection from heavy rain. Later visitors credited the ruined court's recovery to a forgotten gardener. The evidence beneath the roosts suggested a less formal caretaker with blue feathers and a habit of dropping seeds beside old stone walls.

A Gemtrain's first full display is traditionally witnessed without music or applause. Garden keepers leave enough distance for the bird to lower its train whenever it chooses. The best-known Regalume bond began when a companion replanted a damaged seed bed instead of waiting for a performance. The resulting Regal Display became a welcome offered at the garden entrance, a sign that the restored court could once again support a gathered community.

Origins & background

The eye markings on a mature train are colored feather structures, not additional eyes. Their bright centers remain visible when the fan is partly folded, helping individuals recognize familiar neighbors among dense leaves. With Iron joining at Prime, the train's supporting quills develop a firmer mineral sheen, while the plumes themselves retain the flexible curves needed for careful movement.

Behavior

Plumip practices short displays before reflective puddles and occasionally forgets to watch where it is walking. Older forms choose open ground before lifting their train. They dislike being crowded from behind, but often relax when visitors spend time tending nearby plants without demanding their attention.

Diet

It eats fallen jewel-fruit, soft shoots, and small ground insects, selecting ripe fruit carefully and carrying some pieces to sheltered places before opening them.

Place in the ecosystem

This line distributes orchard seeds into protected pockets beside ruins and beneath shrubs. Its browsing clears small openings without stripping the canopy, helping the old court support both young fruit trees and lower-growing woodland plants.

Neighbors & bonds

Petalop visits the low flowers around a Gemtrain's feeding route, while Tanglehorn shelters young trees nearby. Regalume tolerates both within its display ground, provided everyone leaves enough open space for a safe turn.

Gemtrain ↗

Gemtrain develops more distinct fan feathers and a fuller body beneath its folded wings. The bright spots become clearer even before the train opens. It begins choosing display clearings that remain close to fruit and safe routes through the undergrowth.

Crownveil ↗

Crownveil gains a broad, firmer train as Iron joins Grove, with mineral-sheened quills supporting the expanding feather fan. Its crown stands more steadily above the head, and its careful display posture becomes a visible signal that companions may gather nearby.

Meeting in the wild.

  1. 01

Search quiet orchard edges after fruit has fallen rather than entering the busiest display ground.

  2. 02

Keep behind-fan approaches wide and visible.

  3. 03

Replant damaged jewel-seed beds to demonstrate care before seeking the later bond milestones.

“I waited all morning for a display. It happened while I was replacing a seedling label, and I nearly missed the invitation hidden inside the spectacle.”— Hearthwild field notes
