MORE THAN A NAME
The story of Puffcoil.
Puffcoil drifts through Skyveil as a continuous ribbon of cloud-soft scales, with a broad muzzle and long whiskers. Its coiled body matures into Nimboryn, a rare Gale spirit that follows the archipelago's high, changing routes of moisture.
Skyveil's earliest bridge maps drew a river across empty air. Visitors assumed the mark was decorative until they saw Puffcoil following the same suspended line each morning. The cloud river was a recurring meeting of cool mist and sheltered wind, reliable enough for local creatures to use as a route. Its course shifted gradually, and the serpents shifted with it while the maps remained fixed.
When the river divided around a damaged shrine platform, a young Cloudriven repeatedly returned to the abandoned side. A companion followed its whiskers toward a surviving seep beneath the stonework and cleared the obstruction around it. Reconnecting that small source helped the familiar mist route gather again. Nimbustrand is remembered in Skyveil as the shape of a path found together: winding, visible for a moment, and useful precisely because someone had learned where to look.
Origins & background
Puffcoil's cloudlike outline conceals a continuous curving body rather than a gathering of unrelated wisps. Its pale fins and whiskers exaggerate changes in posture, making a resting coil appear larger than its narrow frame. At Prime, Tide joins Gale and the mature line becomes more closely associated with the cloud river's wet terraces and gathering rain.
A PLACE TO BELONG
Life in Skyveil.
High mountain cloud rivers.
Behavior
Puffcoil circles an unfamiliar landing before lowering its muzzle toward it. Older forms follow the edges of moving mist and pause where a route divides. Nimboryn tolerates companions who wait for a safe crossing instead of trying to force the same journey through every change of weather.
Diet
It takes soft cloud-moss growth, wind-carried seeds, and moisture gathered on high leaves, feeding slowly along damp terraces rather than stripping a single exposed perch.
Place in the ecosystem
The line moves seeds and fragments of cloud moss between wet island terraces. Its repeated routes help observers notice where moisture corridors are changing, guiding the preservation of small habitats beyond the reach of ordinary ground paths.
Neighbors & bonds
Voltrik uses some of the same high resting points but prefers their clearer outer branches. Cloudriven often pauses beneath those perches, while the rain from their shared landscape eventually feeds Glasswater pools occupied by Reefclaw.
ONE BOND, FOUR CHAPTERS
The Puffcoil lineage.
Evolution combines experience with a meaningful milestone. A WildKin may keep its current form until its keeper is ready.
Puffcoil ↗
Puffcoil has a short continuous coil, a pale broad muzzle, and whiskers that seem oversized for its small head. Its first cloud fins rest close to the body, and it investigates landings with slow, curious circles above the damp stone.
Mistwhorl Current
Mistwhorl lengthens its body into a clearer winding curve and develops a fuller gathering of cloud-soft scales along its back. Its whiskers sweep farther outward, and it starts maintaining a familiar route between neighboring terraces instead of one resting island.
Cloudriven ↗
Cloudriven gains a stronger association with wet cloud terraces as Tide joins Gale. More developed fins frame its longer coil, and its whiskers become a conspicuous guide to its attention. It begins revisiting the seep sources that sustain familiar mist corridors.
Nimboryn ↗
Nimboryn carries an impressive curling frame beneath pale cloud fins and long, graceful whiskers. A mature brow sail gives its face a watchful profile. It follows broad moisture routes between islands, returning patiently to the small sheltered sources on which those routes depend.
INSTINCT & ELEMENT
How it holds its own.
Cloud Current
Following an existing allied movement route briefly improves its maneuverability.
Nimbustrand
GaleA winding gust pushes enemies apart and creates a short safe route for allies.
A WildKin equips up to four moves. Its secondary element joins at Prime, alongside its signature move. Read the battle and evolution rules →
FROM THE KEEPER’S NOTEBOOK
Meeting in the wild.
- 01
Watch where separate strands of mist repeatedly gather above a terrace.
- 02
Wait at a safe landing and let the serpent complete its inspection.
- 03
Trace the cloud river back to its seep sources before searching the exposed sky crossings.
“I marked the river on my map. By noon it had moved, while the Puffcoil had not lost its way at all. I corrected the map.”— Hearthwild field notes
