Flarebound

EmberGale

The story of Coaljoey.

Coaljoey and its evolutions travel Cinderreach's warm grasslands on powerful hind legs. A long tripod tail, rounded ember pouch, upright ears, and flame-shaped hock growth develop into the distinctive silhouette of an agile, wind-aware striker.

The Redseed circuit begins with a fragile pod placed in a woven sling. Participants may travel at any pace, but the pod must reach the far planting hollow intact. Coaljoey usually start with great enthusiasm, then stop to investigate every warm stone. Skiplaze take longer bounds and sometimes return to the beginning after hearing a pod rattle. The watchers keep the route open rather than cheering from its narrow turns.

A Flarebound once completed the circuit during a crosswind that kept lifting the empty slings from their posts. It carried its pod low, using its tail whenever a landing looked uncertain, and paused until another traveling group had cleared the final hollow. The pod opened there after the seasonal rain. A Blazeroam now rests beneath the resulting tree, while younger animals practice on the circuit below. There is no record board at Redseed. Each successful journey is marked by something that keeps growing after the traveler has left.

Origins & background

Cinderreach's charcoal grasslands recover unevenly after heat and seasonal dryness. The line's pouch and balanced tripod stance make it a natural carrier across that broken terrain. Mature Gale sweeps develop around the shoulders, complementing the existing Ember hock growth. Longer legs do not eliminate the need for cautious landings; experienced forms often wait more deliberately than the restless young.

Behavior

Coaljoey explore with quick hops interrupted by long inspections. Adults brace on their tails when handling a delicate object and watch the ground beyond a landing point before moving. Their ears follow separate sounds, while a lowered pouch and still hock feathers accompany concentrated carrying.

Diet

Red grasses, tough seed heads, scrub leaves, and warm-climate fruit. They favor new growth around older feeding patches and carry uneaten pods toward suitable resting or planting hollows.

Place in the ecosystem

Their journeys move durable grassland seeds across bare gaps that smaller grazers avoid. Repeated landing hollows gather loose soil, giving some carried pods a sheltered place to germinate when rain returns.

Neighbors & bonds

Sootsnout open the compacted ground where carried pods later sprout. Flareback share sheltered warming stops, while Curlamb at the high grassland edge offer calm company when a young Skiplaze is learning to wait through a gust.

The Coaljoey lineage.

Evolution combines experience with a meaningful milestone. A WildKin may keep its current form until its keeper is ready.

Coaljoey ↗

An upright red youngster with orange haunches, a cream pouch, tall dark ears, and a long supporting tail. Small flame feathers rise around its hocks. It explores through energetic hops but still relies on a tail brace when handling anything delicate.

Skiplaze ↗

Longer ears and a more balanced torso accompany stronger hindquarters and additional flame hock layers. The tail develops a fuller ember blade. It starts linking familiar landing places into a route, learning that a controlled stop matters as much as a confident takeoff.

Blazeroam ↗

A tall poised body balances immense haunches, layered flame hocks, a broad ember pouch, and sweeping Gale shoulder growth. The tripod tail remains central to its measured handling. It crosses difficult grassland with assurance, choosing landings that protect both its cargo and the ground beneath it.

Meeting in the wild.

  1. 01

Look beside established landing hollows along warm scrub routes.

  2. 02

Offer a quiet carrying task before proposing a long circuit.

  3. 03

Wait for clear ground beyond the next landing point.

“The Flarebound could have crossed in fewer bounds. It used the extra landing to check the pod, and the watchers quietly moved their baskets aside.”— Hearthwild field notes
