MORE THAN A NAME
The story of Coalhop.
Coalhop is a broad furnace toad with a generous croaking mouth, powerful folded haunches, and warm back vents. Around Cinderreach's volcanic workshops, it matures into Crucibull, a rare Ember brawler whose familiar resting places connect workyards with living mineral pools.
The Workshop of Warm Rain earned its name from steam that once settled gently over the neighboring plant beds. When its kiln overflow began running into the wrong channel, the gardens dried in some places and drowned in others. Coalhop gathered beside the original pool lip, croaking whenever workers tried to hurry past. Their favored sitting stones marked a useful water level that the damaged measuring posts no longer showed.
A Kilncroak's companion traced the blocked overflow through the Clinker Garden, clearing it carefully around new roots and nesting hollows. The work restored both the workshop and the shallow nursery beyond it. By the time the toad became Crucibull, its resting stone had been left deliberately inside the renewed yard. Crucible Croak entered local songs as a work-call: pause, look around, and remember which living neighbors depend on the next decision.
Origins & background
The line's furnace features are integrated into a living Forged body: broad mineral-colored cheeks, copper-toned limbs, and dark curved chimneys along the back. Vent patterns differ between individuals. Iron joins Ember at Prime as its plates and supporting structures become more pronounced. Workshop keepers value its habits as observations of a shared landscape, without treating the creature as an interchangeable tool.
A PLACE TO BELONG
Life in Cinderreach.
Volcanic workshops and warm mineral pools.
Behavior
Coalhop settles its heavy body before giving a deep, satisfied croak. Older forms favor warm stones with a clear path to shallow water. Crucibull watches workshop activity closely and sometimes follows a familiar keeper between the kiln yard and the nursery pool before choosing a place to rest.
Diet
It eats mineral-rich pond growth, softened char-fruit, and small volcanic-pool invertebrates, taking clean water from the cooler edges of its favored warm resting stones.
Place in the ecosystem
The toads move organic scraps between workshop margins and mineral-pool gardens, contributing to the feeding grounds around warm shallows. Their persistent choice of resting stones helps attentive caretakers notice when altered runoff is disturbing those small habitats.
Neighbors & bonds
Cindlet shares the warmer stones beyond the pool, while Reefclaw sometimes visits the cooler channels during coastal journeys. A Kilncroak tolerates both when the workyard leaves clear routes between dry shelter and the shallows.
ONE BOND, FOUR CHAPTERS
The Coalhop lineage.
Evolution combines experience with a meaningful milestone. A WildKin may keep its current form until its keeper is ready.
Coalhop Current
Coalhop has a wide stone-colored head, a copper body, and folded frog haunches planted beside a generous mouth. A small dark back vent rises behind its eyes, while its broad toes spread carefully across the warm stones where it rests.
Kilncroak ↗
Kilncroak develops a clearer line of back chimneys and stronger articulated haunches. Its mouth remains comically broad beneath the raised eyes. It starts following familiar workshop routines, making deliberate journeys between the kiln yard and a chosen shallow pool at the edge.
Furnacog ↗
Furnacog grows pronounced cheek scutes and firmer supporting plates as Iron joins Ember. Its chimneys rise into a more substantial silhouette, while broad feet steady its heavier frame. It begins choosing rest positions that overlook both the working yard and the water route.
Crucibull ↗
Crucibull carries tall curved furnace vents above a powerful, low toad body, with broad cheeks and heavy folded limbs. Its open expression keeps the industrial silhouette unmistakably creaturelike. It becomes a watchful workshop neighbor, returning to resting stones preserved within a healthy shared yard.
INSTINCT & ELEMENT
How it holds its own.
Banked Furnace
A guarded turn stores a small damage bonus for its next attack, without stacking.
Crucible Croak
EmberA short heated shockwave damages adjacent enemies and briefly reduces their movement.
A WildKin equips up to four moves. Its secondary element joins at Prime, alongside its signature move. Read the battle and evolution rules →
FROM THE KEEPER’S NOTEBOOK
Meeting in the wild.
- 01
Listen for low croaks beside warm stones near the pool edge.
- 02
Approach from open ground and leave the route to shallow water clear.
- 03
Repair the overflow without draining the nursery or covering its occupied resting ledges.
“The foreman called it the old pressure gauge. The Crucibull opened one eye and moved onto his lunch cloth. I suspect it preferred being called a neighbor.”— Hearthwild field notes
