Chromarch

GroveShadeRare

Broad cheek fringes frame an immense flowing casque above a long, narrow body and substantial spiral tail. Purple layers break its silhouette against deep cover. An experienced Chromarch selects a place in the canopy that offers awareness without demanding ownership of the whole crossing.

The story of Tintlet.

The Tintlet line lives among Heartwood's layered leaves and suspended vine routes. Eye turrets, a flowing casque crest, shifting scale patches, and a complete spiral tail create a watchful controller adapted to changing light and dense cover.

A canopy journal from Ladderleaf records the same Veilcrest beneath three different headings: new leaf, sunlit bark, and rain-dark vine. The observer drew its tail spiral in every sketch before realizing the pages followed one traveling creature. Its colors changed with its resting places, but its choices were more interesting than the disguises. It always settled where it could watch a second branch without occupying it.

The journal's later pages leave generous blank spaces around each drawing. Those spaces record the traffic of other creatures: a Ziplet landing, a Budbun crossing a flowering bridge, a Mossprig passing on the ground below. The creature eventually appears as a Chromarch with an immense curved crest and dark cheek fringes. Its final portrait occupies only the corner of a page. Across the rest, the observer has drawn the whole canopy route, including every place where the watchful animal chose to let another traveler pass first.

Origins & background

Heartwood's upper forest layers offer sharply different light over very short distances. This line's changing color patches and independently attentive eye housings suit life among those overlapping conditions. Its tail remains a solid muscular spiral used in balance and resting posture. Mature Shade growth deepens the contrast around its casque and cheeks without erasing the green and teal identity of its earliest form.

Behavior

Tintlet studies movement for a long time before changing perches. Adults keep an escape branch available and dislike being surrounded by several approaching observers. A slow crest turn may precede the body by a noticeable pause, while a relaxed tail maintains its full open spiral.

Diet

Canopy insects, soft leaf beetles, small fruit, and occasional tender buds. It feeds from established perches and rarely strips a whole cluster of leaves to reach one item.

Place in the ecosystem

By feeding and resting across different canopy layers, the line keeps insect concentrations from settling in one narrow patch. Its lightly used perch network preserves crossing opportunities for other small forest travelers.

Neighbors & bonds

Ziplet share open landing branches with patient Veilcrest, while Budbun use flowering vine bridges below them. Fernip occupy a similar guiding role at ground level, and the two lines often watch opposite ends of the same forest opening.

Origin · Level 1+

Tintlet ↗

A narrow teal reptile with green facial volumes, rounded eye turrets, a small flowing casque, and a conspicuous spiral tail. Modest purple scale patches mark its sides. It favors low broad leaves where it can inspect a route before climbing farther.

Veilcrest ↗

The casque lengthens into additional curved layers above a steadier head, while the tail forms a fuller muscular spiral. More color-shifting scale patches follow the body. It begins choosing perches for their view of neighboring routes rather than simply for immediate shelter.

Prime · Level 35+

Prismalurk ↗

A curved ivory nasal horn rises before the mature casque, and shadowed scale layers deepen around a more confident frame. Its posture becomes economical and watchful. It can remain at an unobtrusive perch through changing light while keeping several nearby movements in view.

Meeting in the wild.

  1. 01

Identify the tail spiral before relying on body color.

  2. 02

Observe from one side and leave the next branch open.

  3. 03

Record a quiet canopy route without handling nests or moving resting creatures.

“Its color changed while I wrote the first sentence. Its chosen perch did not. I learned more by recording what it watched than what it resembled.”— Hearthwild field notes
